Pricing your book for profit

Most self-published novels price their Kindle eBook between $2.99 and $5.99 to stay inside the 70% royalty band, and price paperbacks high enough to cover printing and still earn a few dollars per copy. Nonfiction and specialist books can often charge more. Long books cost more to print, so a 500 page paperback needs a higher list price than a 200 page one.

  • Check what comparable books in your category charge
  • Keep eBooks inside the $2.99 to $9.99 band to earn 70%
  • Price paperbacks at $9.99 or more where you can, to earn 60% rather than 50%
  • Use launch discounts and promotions rather than permanently low prices

Rates in this calculator reflect KDP's published US royalty rules and printing costs at the time of writing. KDP updates its rates from time to time, so confirm on KDP before publishing. To estimate page count from your word count, use our page count and spine calculator.

FAQ

Book Royalty Calculator questions

How the numbers are worked out and what they mean for your book.

On Amazon.com, eBooks priced from $2.99 to $9.99 can earn a 70% royalty minus a delivery fee of $0.15 per megabyte. Outside that price range the royalty is 35% with no delivery fee.

On Amazon.com, paperbacks priced at $9.99 or more earn 60% of the list price, and lower prices earn 50%. The printing cost, based on page count, ink type and trim size, is then subtracted.

Only between regular and large trim. Large trim means wider than 6.12 inches or taller than 9 inches, and it carries a higher per-page cost.

If the printing cost is higher than your share of the list price, you would not earn a royalty. KDP will ask you to raise the price before publishing.

No. Kindle Unlimited pays per page read from a monthly fund, which varies, so it is not included here.
